Today is Day 6 of the
Spring 2026 Little Amazon Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along, which means we are halfway through. The Little Amazon animal I decided to share today is a Giant River Otter, but in mini form so in this case it is a Not So Giant Otter.

Otters are some of my favorite animals to watch at the zoo or aquarium, but most of the otters I have seen in those places are other types of otters that are much smaller, the North American River Otter or Asian Small-Clawed Otter. I have only seen Giant River Otters one time, and I'm pretty sure it was when I visited Moody Gardens in Galveston Texas with my daughter a few years ago and they were outside where you couldn't really see them very well, but I remember being surprised at how big they were. I love to watch the otters when they have an underwater viewing area and they go in the water. The way they zip around and glide in the water is a lot of fun to watch.

I always look at a lot of pictures and research a little bit about the animals as I make them, mostly just because making the animal makes me curious and I want to learn about them. One of the things that was interesting about giant river otters is that they have kind of splotchy patches of a lighter white or cream color on their neck and chest area. Each otter has a unique patch and is a way that other otters can identify them. Some of them have a lot of cream color, while others only have a few small spots. I made kind of a big cream patch on my little otter, maybe too much, but I think it turned out pretty cute. You could add less cream if you want, but it should be kind of splotchy and random.

I also gave my little otter a long tail, short little legs, and tiny ears. I embroidered a little nose and mouth on the muzzle or nose piece.

You will only need 2 colors to make a little otter. First a brown for the main color. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Cafe Latte. I originally wanted a darker brown but I already had this color out from using it on the Capybara and I didn't really want to pull another color so I just went with it, and I was really happy with how it looked. Then you will need a cream color for the neck patch, I used Red Heart Super Saver in Aran.

We are halfway done with the Little Amazon Crochet Along, just as a reminder there will be no new pattern tomorrow, but come back Monday for animal number 7.
