Today is Day 2 of the Spring 2026 Little Amazon Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along. We started off our Amazon animals yesterday high up in the tree tops with a Scarlet Macaw and today we are heading back down to the forest floor for a Little Capybara.

Capybaras are kind of funny to me because they have become so popular recently. The first time I remember really hearing about Capybara was a little over 20 years ago. I spent some time in my early 20's in Uruguay where I served a mission for my church. Although Uruguay borders Brazil, it is very far from the Amazon Rainforest area. Uruguay is more of a temperate grassland biome. So for the most part the animals you will find there are very different than the animals in the Amazon, but the Capybara is an exception, and probably one of very few that is native to both areas. I was never in a place where we would have seen them in the wild, the only Capybara I saw when I was there were in captivity, one someone had as a pet, and another time when we went to a zoo. But I still thought it was an interesting animal, kind of cool because it was something unique to that area, and honestly at the same time slightly grossed out by the fact that it was a giant rodent.

I thought of that when I was deciding which animals to include in this set and it just made me laugh because now I feel like you see Capybara everywhere, not the actual animal, but toys, plushes, stickers, etc. I'm not really sure what caused them to become so popular, but they are.

Because I wanted to make my mini Capybara in the same style as my other animals it was actually kind of difficult to figure out. One of the things that makes them so unique is their their shape, especially their kind of square, flat nose area. I tried to achieve this by adding a square muzzle to the front of the head, and spacing the eyes further out to the side of the head than I typically do with my mini animals. Then I gave it little ears, arms, and legs to complete it. I also put the ears a little farther back on the head, maybe a little too far back I kind of wish I had moved them just a tad closer to the front, but I think that also helps elongate the head a little to give it the shape I was trying to achieve.

For the Little Capybara I only used 2 colors, one lighter brown/tan color and another darker brown color. I used Red Heart Super Saver for both, Buff for the lighter tan color I used for the main body color, and Cafe Latte for the darker brown accents. I also think the Capybara would look good with a little bit darker brown body, or even a brown with a little more of an orange tone to it, but I decided to go with the lighter tan color for mine.

Be sure to come back tomorrow to see what Day 3's Little Amazon Animal will be!

The body and head are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sewn on. Most pieces are made beginning with a magic ring (mr), the beginning of each piece will indicate if it starts with a magic ring or a chain.

Nose

Make 1 starting with brown yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 4 sc (4 sc)
Round 2: 3 sc in each st (12 sc)

switch to tan yarn

Round 3: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in first st [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2] 3 times, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in last st

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Embroider nostrils by stitching 2 little lines near the top of the nose, if you want you could also stitch a mouth by stitching a line down the center and then a line going off each side like an upside down T, I tried that and felt like I preferred just the nostrils so that is what I went with.

Add some stuffing and sew the nose to the front of the head between the eyes

Ears

Make 2 with brown yarn, beginning with magic ring

in mr, ch 1, 3 sc (3 sc)

Pull to tighten into a semicircle shape

Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing

Sew ears to the top of the head kind of toward the back

Legs

Make 4 starting with brown yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in blo of each st (6 sc)

Switch to tan yarn

Rounds 3-4: 1 sc in each st (6 st)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Sew the 2 of the legs/arms to the side of the body just below the head, sew the other 2 to the bottom side of the body in a sitting position

  1. I love the little capybara. The zoo by me participates in a breeding program. The babies are so adorable.
