We are already to Day 5 of the Little Amazon Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along. Only one more day and we will be halfway through. On Day 1 we started off high up in the canopies of the rainforest with the Macaw and I was going to say that we are heading back up the the treetops again with today's animal, but then I stopped to think of the animals we have done so far and the only one that doesn't live high up in the trees is the Capybara. But like day 1, today we have another bird of the rainforest, this time a Tiny Toucan.
There are so many cool birds that live in the Amazon, so I knew when I decided on the theme that there would be a few different bird in the series. This is the second bird in the Little Amazon, but it won't be the last one.
The toucan isn't quite as bright and colorful as the Scarlet Macaw from day 1, but it is still a pretty colorful bird, specifically in the beak. As I looked at reference photos there are a few different colors of Toucan's so you can switch up the colors to get the look you want. Also, The colors are not as striped as I made them, especially on the beak. The colors are more patchy or blended, but I am working with a 4" tall crocheted bird so I used stripes of colors on the beak and the throat patch to give the effect of the different colors the best that I could.
I used the coloring of the Toco Toucan as the inspiration for my Tiny Toucan. It has a white patch on its throat with orange around the eyes. The beak has some black spots on it with yellow and orange. There are other Toucans like the Keel Billed Toucan with yellow throat patches and more colors on their beaks, like red, and lime green. Another thing I learned about Toucans is that they have blue feet. I didn't know that until I started making this bird.
For this bird I used mostly Red Heart Super Saver. I used it in Black, White, Pumpkin, and Bright Yellow. The only color I used a different brand for was the blue for the feet. For those I used Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Cornflower.
Come back tomorrow for the halfway point and to see what the Day 6 animal in the Little Amazon will be!
