Today is Day 10 of The Bitty Blizzard Crochet Along. It is also the last snowman in the series. This is the 4th snowman, and this last one is wearing a tiny top hat.

As I have mentioned before I had a hard time choosing what type of snowman to make so rather than pick one I ended up choosing 4 different versions. The snowman wearing a top hat was one that I felt like I had to do since it is the classic snowman look.

You will notice that the snowman bodies are all made the same, as well as the noses. Two of the snowmen have branched arms that make a Y shape- the snowman in the beanie and the stocking cap, and the other two have straight arms with mittens on the end- this one and the earmuff snowman. I originally was only going to make one with mittens but since there were four I decided to do two of each style. A little note on the mittens, I know some people struggled with the thumb piece on the last snowman with mittens. The way that you get it to stick up is by going behind it (so the thumb is held up against the mitten and you put your yarn and hook behind to reach the next stitch) and slip stitching in the stitch after. That should hold it up in place, but if it doesn't you can also use the tail yarn to stitch it into the position you want when you attach it to the arm. Or if you prefer the look of no mittens you can just substitute the Y arms that the other snowmen have. All four have scarfs, you can add fringe like the earmuff snowman, or leave it plain like the others. Then the thing that makes them all different is their hats- one with a beanie, another with earmuffs, one with a long stocking cap, and finally this one with the top hat.

Once again you will need white yarn for the little snowman, orange for the carrot nose, and brown for the stick arms. I used the same colors that I used in the other snowmen for those parts- Red Heart Super Saver in White, Pumpkin, and Cafe Latte. For the accessories you can use any colors that you want. I chose to use a charcoal gray for the hat, pink for a hat band, green for the mittens, and teal for the scarf, all also Red Heart Super Saver colors- Charcoal, Pretty N Pink, Spring Green, and Jade.

It is kind of crazy that there are only 2 more days left in the Bitty Blizzard Crochet Along! Come back tomorrow to see what Day 11 will bring.

How to Crochet a Little Snowman with a Top Hat

Finished size: about 5" tall

Instructions:

The body and head are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sew on. Most pieces are made beginning with a magic ring (mr), the beginning of each piece will indicate if it starts with a magic ring or a chain.

Body

Make 1 with white yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Rounds 6-10: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Round 11: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 12: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] (18 sc)

Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work

Round 13: sc2tog around (9 sc)
Round 14: 2 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 15: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 16-19: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
Round 20: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] (18 sc)

Insert safety eyes between round 17 and 18 about 3-4 stitches apart

Round 21: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 22: sc2tog around (6 sc)

Finish off, weave in ends

Arms

Make 2 with brown yarn, beginning with a chain

ch 6
sl st in last ch (closest to hook), and each ch to the end (6 sl st)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Sew the arms to the side of the body, this time I sewed them close to the neck area so that they were kind of hanging down the sides of the snowman

Nose

Make 1 with orange yarn

ch 2
turn, sl st in first ch, sc in next

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Sew the nose to the face between the eyes

Stitch a little mouth below the nose.

Mittens

Make 2 with any color, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
Round 3: ch 3, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, 1 sc in each st around, push the thumb (made with the ch 3, 2 sc at the beginning of the round) up against the rest of the mitten and bringing you hook behind it work a sl st in the next st (what would be the first in the next round), this should push the thumb piece into the right position (8 sc- 2 sc in the thumb ch, 6 in the round)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Place the mittens on the ends of the stick arms, It may be helpful to either use something to help you push the arm into the mitten, or poke the crochet hook through the top of the mitten and use the hook to pull the arm in, use the tail on the mitten to stitch the mitten in place and secure it to the end of the arm.

Scarf

Make 1 with any color, beginning with a ch

ch 36
turn, hdc in third ch from hook and each ch to the end (34 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Add a fringe if desired by cutting 6 strands of yarn each a few inches long, fold one in half, pull the loop through the end of the scarf, then pull the ends through the loop and pull to tighten, repeat so you have 3 pieces on each end of the scarf (you should have 6 strands of fringe on each side because each one is folded in half), trim to the length you want.

Wrap the scarf around the snowman's neck and tie, use tail to tack in place in a couple places to secure if desired

Hat

Make 1 with any color, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: 1 sc in blo (back loop only) of each st (24 sc)
Rounds 6-7: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
Round 8: work each st in this round in the flo (front loop only), [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Round 9: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (36 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Hat Band

make 1 with any color

ch 25 or the number needed to wrap around the hat

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Place the hat on the head and stitch in place, you can add a little bit of stuffing inside the hat if you want before placing on the head  (just don't add so much that the hat becomes puffy, just enough to help it hold its shape)

Wrap the hat band around the hat and tie the ends to secure, tack in a few places around the hat to secure and weave in ends
