Today is the final day of The Bitty Blizzard Crochet Along, Day 12. Twelve days of little wintery, snowy amigurumi designs and the last pattern to finish the series is a little Smiling Snowflake.

I figured a snowflake was a fitting final design for a snow themed crochet along. In some ways this is probably the most complicated design of all of the designs in this series. Not because it is super hard to make, but because the construction is a little bit different than the other amigurumi that were in this series, but it is similar to the Star in my first Christmas Crochet Along. And also because I think this one probably has more pieces than any of the others, mostly multiples of the same piece, but there are still a lot of them.

To make the snowflake you will start out with 2 small circles. Then you will place those two circles together and working through the stitches on both circles you will make the 6 arms of the snowflake, one at a time. Stitch markers are very helpful for this part.

After that you will have a piece that looks kind of like a 6 pointed star. Then you will make 12 little pieces that will make the little nubs that branch off of each of the arms. Then sew those on the ends of the arms and you will have a little amigurumi snowflake.

This mini amigurumi only uses one color and that one color is white. I used white in every single one of the amigurumi in this series, although there are 2- the hat and the mitten, that don't require white, I just decided to use it as one of the colors. But the other 10 all needed white for at least one piece. I guess that is to be expected for a snow theme. I used the same Red Heart Super Saver in White that I have used in all of the mini amigurumi in this series.

And with that we finish the Bitty Blizzard Crochet Along. I hope you have enjoyed this mini amigurumi series. All of the patterns will remain available for free on my blog, and the ebook with all of the patterns will be available soon in my Etsy and Ravelry shops. I will update this post, and all of the other Bitty Blizzard posts, with the links as soon as it is available.

How to Crochet a Smiling Snowflake

Finished size: about 4.5" across

You will need:

Instructions:

The snowflake is made starting with 2 circles that will become the center of the snowflake, then you will crochet 6 arms coming off of the center by working across a few stitches on one circle and then across the same stitches on the other circle, and repeating that process 6 times. The final part will be to crochet little branch pieces that will be sewn on the end of each arm.

Snowflake Centers

Make 2 with white yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)

On one circle add the safety eyes and embroider a mouth

Place both circles together, wrong sides together, and insert a stitch marker in every 4th stitch through both layers (see picture above)

Snowflake Arms

Continue working with white yarn, you will work in the stitches on both circles, but only through one layer at a time, then turning to work through the other circle. Each "arm" will go from stitch marker to stitch marker so each stitch with a marker will be worked in twice, once from the arm to the left of it, once from the arm to the right. So you will work in the front stitches from marker to marker, then the same stitches on the back circle from marker to marker. Each arm will be a tube shape open to the circles in the center.

Round 1: start in one of the stitch marker stitches, sc through the front st of the marked sts, sc in the next 3 sts across the front circle (working only through the front circle), sc in the front st of the next marked sts, turn so you are working along the back circle, 1 sc in the back st of the marked sts, sc in next 3 sts, sc in last marked st (back st of 1 marked set of sts) (10 sc)
Round 2: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (8 sc)
Rounds 3-5: 1 sc in each st (8 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for weaving opening closed

Push some stuffing into the snowflake arm

Weave around stitches in final round and pull to close, weave in tail to secure

Repeat this process 5 more times so that you have all 6 arms, adding stuffing to each arm and to the center as you go

Branches

Make 12 with white yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Sew one little piece to each side of all 6 arms, near the top to give the snowflake its branching shape at the end of each arm
