Today we are starting the second week of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along with the pattern for Day 7. Today's little vegetable was made as one, but change up the colors a little and you could easily turn it into other vegetables. Today we are adding a Blissful Beet to the harvest.
When I plan my crochet along I always start out with a list of way more than 12 ideas. Then I have to narrow it down until I get to only 12. Since I can't include everything, if there are things that are similar shapes I will usually choose only one. I felt like a beet, a radish, and a turnip were all similar shapes so I only wanted to include one, but I wasn't sure which one to include.
I decided on a beet, only because when I went to choose a yarn color I had a dark purpley red wine color that I thought would be perfect for a beet. But, I think you could use a little bit of white on the root end and then a bright pink or red color for the rest to turn it into a radish, or make most of it in white with purple towards the top to turn it into a turnip.
The shape is kind of a round shape with a long pointy root end and a leafy top. Since with beets the leaves have a dark reddish vein in the center I wanted to make it that way. To do that I started by making the center piece and then crocheted a green leaf around the center.
For the beet I used Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Wine, one of the colors I had left over from my Random Rows Sedge Stitch Blanket. I used that same color for the vein of the leaf, then I used Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Leaf Green (or possibly Red Heart Super Saver in Medium Thyme, they are very similar and I have small balls of both and have a hard time telling them apart, basically just a dark green color is what I chose)

How to Crochet a Blissful Beet
Finished Size: about 3" tall from root to the top of the beet, about 5" tall including the leaves
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in dark red and green (sample made in Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Wine, and Leaf Green)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The beet is made in 4 pieces, the beet, and 3 leaves. The beet is made starting with a magic ring, the leaves start with a chain. You will make a single crochet row for the center vein, then work the leaf around that.
Beet
Make 1 with dark red yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 4 sc (4 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in each st (4 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (6 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (9 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (12 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat (18 sc)
Round 7: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (24 sc)
Round 8: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat (30 sc)
Rounds 9-13: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Round 14: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 11-12 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 15: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 16: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 17: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off, weave opening closed, weave in end
Leaf Center Vein
Make 3 with dark red yarn, beginning with a chain
ch 9
sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each ch to the end (8 sc)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Leaf
Make 3 with green yarn, working into the center vein pieces
Round 1: starting on the end with the tails, skip the first 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st, 2 dc in next st, in last st work 2 sc, then turning to work in the other side of the vein work 1 more sc in that top st, 2 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts (9 sc, 8 dc)
Finish off and weave in end
Use the tails from the center vein to sew the leaves to the top of the beet.
