Today is Day 8 of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along, two-thirds of the way through. There are only 4 more days to go. Today's addition to the crocheted harvest is a Peppy Pepper.
I thought about different types of peppers that I could include, considering a chili pepper style pepper instead, but I ended up going with a bell pepper. I was a little nervous about getting the shape right, and I still don't think it is perfect, but I think it got pretty close.
My goal with my little pepper was to make it skinnier at the bottom and bigger at the top, and also divided into 3 or 4 sections like the shape of a bell pepper. To make the different sections I wrapped yarn around the outside, going through the center and pulling the yarn to both pull the top and bottom to the center, but also indent the sides. It is the same technique I have used for pumpkins in the past. I feel like along the top and the bottom you can really see the distinct bumps of each section but it isn't quite as defined as I was hoping for along the sides as I was hoping for, but I think it still works.
In the end I am pretty happy with the shape of the little pepper. I added a little green square to the top of the pepper and then a stem attached to that. They aren't necessarily square shaped on a real pepper but I felt like they are usually a little bit more angular, rather than a circle, and I thought a square was the easiest way to give that look in the size I was working with. Overall I think it turned out pretty cute.
I chose to make my pepper yellow, but obviously bell peppers come in a range of colors so you could make it red, orange, or green if you prefer. The only reason I chose to go with yellow is to give a little more variety to my basket of produce. I already had an orange carrot and a couple shades of red with the apple and the tomato. I had a green pear, which to be fair is lighter than the green I would have used for the pepper, but there is also a lot of green with stems and leaves. I just thought the yellow would bring in a new pop of color so I decided to go with that. Since I chose a color pallet that is a little less bright and more of a fall vibe I used Mustard from Loops and Threads Soft Classic for my yellow pepper, and Leaf Green for the stem and top.

How to Crochet a Peppy Tomato
Finished Size: about 3.5" tall
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in yellow or desired color and green (sample made in Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Mustard and Leaf Green)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The pepper is made in 3 pieces, the pepper, the top, and the stem, the pepper and the top start with a magic ring, the stem starts with a chain.
Pepper
Make 1 with yellow (or desired color) yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 5 sts] repeat around (21 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 6 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 7: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
Round 8: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 7 sts] repeat around (27 sc)
Round 9: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 8 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Rounds 10-15: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 10-11 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 16: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 17: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 18: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 19: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a very long tail, weave opening closed, then stick needle down through the center of the pepper to the bottom center, wrap the yarn around the outside of the pepper, then repeat, sticking the needle down the center of the pepper and wrapping around the outside 3-4 times so you have 3 or 4 sections, pulling each wrap so that it squeezes the pepper slightly indenting it.
Stem
Make 1 with green yarn, beginning with a chain
ch 4
sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each ch to the end (3 sc)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Top
Make 1 with green yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 1 sc, ch 2, 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc, ch 2, 1 sc, sl st to first sc to join (8 sc, 4 ch 2 spaces)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Attach the stem to the center of the top, I just pulled the two ends of the stem through the center of the top, tied a knot to secure, and trimmed the ends. You can sew it on if you prefer.
Then sew the top with the stem onto the center top of the pepper
