We are almost to the end of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along, today is Day 11 of 12. For today's addition to the Happy Harvest we have a Zippy Zucchini.
Clear back on Day 2 of the crochet along we had the Smiling Squash that I made to be like a butternut squash, and today we are adding another member of the squash family, this time in the form of a zucchini. I felt like I had to include a zucchini because when I think of home garden harvests that seems to be the thing that everyone grows and has enough to share.
I was a little on the fence about including it though, just because I also had wanted to include the butternut squash because I thought it was a fun shape. The zucchini shape is a little bit more boring to make, pretty much just a long tube kind of shape. But, like I said it seems to be a common thing to grow in gardens so I felt like it would be good to include. There are so many fruits and vegetables I could have included that it was really hard to pick only 12, and this was one that I kind of went back and forth on. I would take it off the list, then add it back on, then take it off again, and put it back until it obviously ultimately made the cut.
The zucchini is about 4.5" tall. It is one of the taller vegetables in the set, but also one of the skinniest. The carrot is the other that is skinnier than most. That is one thing that has been interesting making things other than animals, the variety of different shapes. With the animals I mostly stick to a base body pattern and then change up colors, ears, noses, legs, etc. to make the different animals, but with the foods every pattern is completely different. Luckily with the fruits and vegetables even though they are all a little different, they are also all pretty easy shapes with minimal other pieces and minimal sewing parts together.
I wanted to go with a dark green zucchini because that is what I immediately think of when I picture a zucchini, but you could also make a yellow zucchini if you prefer. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Medium Thyme. I wanted a lighter green for the stem and I didn't have a green that I really liked but I ended up using Frosty Green which is a light sage color. If I had had some on hand I think Tea Leaf would have been a better green, but I didn't want to buy a whole skein for a tiny stem, so I just used what I had.
Tomorrow is the final day of the crochet along, after tomorrow's pattern is released I will get the ebook ready and have it available within the next couple of days. But until then, come back tomorrow to see what the last fruit or vegetable is.
How to Crochet a Zippy Zucchini
Finished Size: about 4.5" tall
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in dark and light green (sample made in Red Heart Super Saver in Medium Thyme, and Frosty Green)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The zucchini is made in 2 pieces, the zucchini, and the stem. Both pieces start with a magic ring.
Zucchini
Make 1 with dark green yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 5 sts] repeat (21 sc)
Rounds 5-7: 1 sc in each st (21 sc)
Round 8: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 5 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Rounds 9-17: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 10-11 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 18: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 19: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off, weave opening closed, and weave in ends
Stem
Make 1 with light green yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in blo of in each st (6 sc)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Sew stem to top of zucchini
