Today is Day 9 of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along. We are getting close to the end, only 3 more days to go. Today an Overjoyed Onion is joining the basket of fruits and veggies.
I figured with a bell pepper yesterday it only made sense to add an onion today, since I feel like peppers and onions often go together. My husband and some of my kids don't like onions so I don't cook with them very often, but I feel like onions are one of the most useful vegetables because they can be used to add flavor to so many things so I definitely wanted to include it in the happy harvest.
I believe the little onion is the biggest, or at least the tallest of the fruits and vegetables in this set, not because the onion itself is bigger than the others but because of the leaves that stick up out of the top. That adds some extra height to the onion, especially because they stick straight up instead of flopping down like the leaves of the beet do.
To make the onion I started with the bulb shape that is mostly just a round shape, but it kind of narrows toward the top. Unlike all of the other fruits and vegetables I did not close off the opening of the bulb when finished, instead I left it open and then made the leaves and inserted them into the opening like they were coming out of the top of the onion bulb. Then I almost left it there, but I felt like it was missing some scraggly little roots at the bottom so I added some bits of yarn at the bottom for the roots.
I went with a white onion so I used Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Off White, but you could also use more of a tan color for a yellow onion, or a dark purple color for a red onion. For the leaves I used Big Twist Value in Olive Drab.

How to Crochet an Overjoyed Onion
Finished Size: about 4.5" tall
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in off white or desired color, and green (sample made in Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Off White and Big Twist Value in Olive Drab)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The onion is made in 3 pieces, the onion bulb, and the 2 leaves, all pieces start with a magic ring.
Onion
Make 1 with off white (or desired color) yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat (30 sc)
Rounds 6-10: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Round 11: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 8-9 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 12: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 13: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 14: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail, do not weave opening closed, set aside to add leaves when finished
Cut 2 strands of yarn 4-6" long, fold in half and pull the folded end through the bottom of the onion and back out (I just stuck my hook in one stitch and out the one next to it and pulled the looped end of the yarn through), pull the cut ends through the loop and tighten (larks head knot), trim ends to desired length
Leaves
Make 1 of each size with green yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Long Leaf
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Rounds 2-9: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn
Short Leaf
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Rounds 2-7: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn
I sewed the bottom edges of the leaves together, this is optional but I felt like it helped me get the leaves into the whole on top of the onion and keep the bottom edges even, then weave in any ends you have on the leaves
Insert the leaves into the top of the onion and use the tail from the onion to secure them in place.
