Today is Day 12, the final day, of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along. For the last fruit or vegetable in the set I decided to make the one that I feel like most represents fall- a Playful Pumpkin.
I actually really didn't plan on including a pumpkin because I have already made a pumpkin in one of my mini amigurumi crochet alongs, the Petite Pumpkin from my Halloween Crochet Along. But the more I thought about it the more I decided I couldn't do a fall fruit and vegetable themed crochet along without including a pumpkin. It is the most representative of fall harvests.
The Petite Pumpkin that I made in the Halloween Crochet Along was a really short pumpkin. It reminded me of the little mini pumpkins that I remember painting as a little kid, the really short, kind of flat pumpkins. I thought I could make this one a little taller, a little more round.
I ended up using basically the same pattern for the pumpkin, but added a few more rounds to make it taller. Then I added a chunky stem and a curly vine. I used the technique of wrapping the yarn around the pumpkin to create the bumpy shape around the pumpkin.
I used Red Heart Super Saver in Carrot for the pumpkin, Loops and Threads Dark Taupe for the stem, and Red Heart Super Saver Medium Thyme for the vine.

How to Crochet a Playful Pumpkin
Finished Size: about 2.5" tall
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in orange, brown, and green (sample made in Red Heart Super Saver in Carrot and Medium Thyme, and Loops & Threads Soft Classic in Dark Taupe)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The pumpkin is made in 3 pieces, the pumpkin, the vine, and the stem, the tomato and the stem start with a magic ring, the vine starts with a chain.
Pumpkin
Make 1 with orange yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat (30 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat (36 sc)
Rounds 7-16: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 10-11 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 17: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Round 18: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 19: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 20: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 21: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a very long tail, weave opening closed, then stick needle down through the center of the pumpkin to the bottom center, wrap around the pumpkin, repeat as many times as desired pulling the yarn so that the sides indent where the yarn is wrapped and the top and bottom pull in slightly to the center.
Stem
Make 1 with brown yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 8 sc (8 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in blo of each st (8 sc)
Round 3: 1 sc in each st
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
You can add a tiny bit of stuffing to the stem if desired, or just leave it empty, and sew it to the top of the pumpkin
Vine
Make 1 with green yarn, beginning with a ch
ch 10
turn, 2 sc in ch closest to hook, 2 sc in each ch to the end
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Attach the vine to the top of the pumpkin, next to the stem. Pull the vine to stretch the curl slightly.
