Today is Day 6 of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along, halfway done and the end of the first week. Today's produce item is kind of a tricky one, is it a fruit, or is it a vegetable? Whichever way you classify it, it is a pretty cute addition to the basket. Today we are adding a Tickled Tomato.
I knew I wanted to include a tomato in this series, but as I was making it I almost felt like it was going to be too simple of a pattern. The tomato itself is basically just a ball with the center pulled in to kind of squish it down and indent the top and bottom. But then I added the little star shaped leafy top and stem (which is apparently called the calyx, I learn lots of new things when making these mini amigurumi), and I felt like that is what really made it look like a tomato.
Like all of the other fruits and vegetables in the series the little tomato has a smiley face made with tiny safety eyes and a little embroidered smile. I love the look of the safety eyes on my mini amigurumi, but if you are making these to be played with by young children I would definitely recommend embroidering them instead. Or if you don't have safety eyes, or just prefer the look of embroidered eyes. You can also leave the faces off for more realistic play food.
Most of the mini amigurumi that I make I try to make about 3"-5" tall, but every once in a while we have one that shape wise just doesn't fit in that range, and this is one. The tomato is only about 2" tall, but it is about 3" in diameter so it is still in the same size range as all of the other pieces. It is just kind of short and wide.
I was trying to go with a slightly more muted palette for my fruits and veggies, rather than super bright colors, but I still wanted a bright red for my tomato, so I chose to use Red Heart Super Save in Cherry Red, which is a bright red but a little bit of a richer, deeper red than Red Heart's Hot Red that is a very bright, almost orangey red. Hot Red might be more of a true tomato red, but it was way brighter than the look I was going for. I was worried the cherry red would still be too bright and stand out when put with the others, but once I finished it and added it to the set I think it worked really well. I used Medium Thyme for the top of the tomato.
There will be no new pattern tomorrow but Monday will start the second week of the Happy Harvest and the next 6 little fruits or vegetables will be released. So be sure to come back Monday to see what next week brings to the Harvest!
How to Crochet a Tickled Tomato
Finished Size: about 2" tall
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in red and green (sample made in Red Heart Super Saver in Cherry Red and Medium Thyme)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The tomato is made in 3 pieces, the tomato, the top, and the stem, the tomato and the top start with a magic ring, the stem starts with a chain.
Tomato
Make 1 with red yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat (30 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat (36 sc)
Rounds 7-12: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)
Round 13: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 9-10 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 14: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 15: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 16: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 17: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail, weave opening closed, then stick needle down through the center of the tomato to the bottom center, poke the needle back up slightly to the side of where you brought the needle down through to the top and pull to cinch the top and bottom in to the center of the tomato, repeat, secure and weave in ends
Stem
Make 1 with green yarn, beginning with a chain
ch 4
sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each ch to the end (3 sc)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Top
Make 1 with green yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: sl st in first st, [ch 3, sl st in each ch, sl st in next st in mr] repeat around ending by sl st in the first st to join the round (6 leaf spikes)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Attach the stem to the center of the top, I just pulled the two ends of the stem through the center of the top, tied a knot to secure, and trimmed the ends. You can sew it on if you prefer.
Then sew the top with the stem onto the center top of the tomato
