5 Little Monsters: More Crocheted Surprise Eggs

More Crocheted Surprise Eggs

A few years ago at Christmas time I did a 12 Days of Crocheted Stocking Stuffers Series where each day for 12 days I shared a small crochet project that would fit in a stocking. There was a variety of different projects included in the series, but one of the projects was a set of little Crocheted Surprise Eggs

At the time my kids were super into the little blind bags and blind boxes that you can get, where you know it will be one of a certain group of toys but you don't know exactly which one you will get until you open it. I wanted to try to make a handmade version of that.

Each little "egg" buttoned closed so you couldn't see what was inside. Inside each one was a tiny little crocheted animal. The original set included a bunny, a bear, a cat, and a bird

Each year since then they have been one of the most popular patterns on my site around both Christmas time and Easter, since they work great for Easter baskets too, maybe even better since they are surprise eggs.

This year I thought it would be fun to revisit that pattern and include a few more animals. This new set has 3 more animals including a frog, a pig, and an owl.

The eggs are made just like the originals, and the basic animal body is the same as well, with a few changes to the eyes/ears/noses, etc.

How to Make Crocheted Surprise Eggs

Finished Size: animals are approximately 3" tall, eggs are slightly larger to fit the animal inside

You will need:

Instructions:

Most of the pieces (egg halves, body, arms, legs) are made by starting with a magic ring and working in a spiral, you do not need to join rounds. All of the animals start with the same body, then arms and legs or wings are added, along with ears, eyes, tails, etc.

Sew a button to the bottom half (measure the location by folding down the top and seeing where the loop hits)
