Crocheted Storage Baskets with Leather Handles

It is a new year, a new month, and a new Team Creative Crafts collaboration! This month the theme is organizing crafts. Be sure to keep reading to see all of the organization crafts and the giveaway!

As soon as I saw the theme for this month I knew what I wanted to make. I felt like it had to be some kind of crocheted baskets. I have been wanting to incorporate leather into a crocheted basket design for a long time and this was the perfect opportunity. I don't know what it is about leather and crochet together but I just think they work so well. I guess maybe it is the naturalness of the materials, even though the yarn I used was acrylic so not exactly natural, but still that kind of vibe.

I crocheted a basket using 3 strands of yarn held together so it was nice and sturdy. I used simple single and double crochet stitches to make the basket, and with the thick yarn it worked up really fast.

I made 2 different sizes, one more of a basket style, and one more of a cup style to hold smaller things, like maybe crochet hooks or markers. With this pattern it would be easy adjust to make whatever size you would like.

I made little leather loop handles to add on the sides, using post screws to attach them. I chose to do the loops rather than a handle that was just on one side because that worked better for the way that I wanted to attach them. I added handles to both sides of the larger basket, and only one side of the smaller. I cut the leather loops with my Cricut, but if you don't have a Cricut you could cut them out with scissors and use an awl to poke the holes.

How to Crochet Storage Baskets with Leather Handles

You will need:

Instructions:

You will need to hold 3 strands of yarn together for this project. You can do this with anywhere from 1-3 skeins of yarn. I used 2 skeins for the cream colored basket, pulling one from the center of each skein, and one from the outside of one of the skeins. For the teal basket I used just one skein of yarn.

To do this take pull out a strand of yarn and fold it so that you have 3 pieces. Kind of a flattened S shape. Hold the end of those three strands together and begin crocheting, you can knot them if it makes it easier. When you reach the looped end take the single strand below and pull through the loop creating another piece with 3 strands. Continue pulling the strand through as you work each time you reach the looped end.
