Tutorial for Avengers Trick or Treat Bags including: Thor, Captain America, Black Widow

Everyone in my house loves superheroes, before I got married I don't know if I could have even told you who the Avengers were. All of that changed when I met my husband and he has made sure that our kids are all superhero fans. Everyone was excited for the new Avengers movie, MARVEL's The Avengers:Age of Ultron, to come out on Blu-Ray/DVD. My husband was the only one who had seen it in the theater and we were all looking forward to watching it.

Each of my kids has picked their own favorite superhero and it is always kind of fun to see who they end up choosing, my oldest daughter always picks the female superheroes, one of my boys likes the big guys, like Hulk, the best. Personally I like the good guys, the ones who always do the right thing just because it is the right thing so my favorite is Captain America. Then there is my little 3 year old daughter, for some reason she has decided that her favorite is Thor, and when I say favorite I do not use that word lightly, she is obsessed. Every time she sees Thor on anything she gets super excited and tells us that that is her favorite. As a result she was really excited when we told her that we going to go to Walmart and buy the new movie and a Thor costume.

We went to the Walmart and first thing we did was head over to the Halloween aisle where she headed straight to the Thor costumes. Then we went back to the electronics section to pick up the movie. After we bought everything and were getting in the car she didn't want me to buckle her in her seat because she wanted to put her Thor costume on. She was not happy when I told her she had to wait the whole 5 minutes it was going to take us to drive home. When we got home she immediately wanted to change into her costume and everyone was asking when we could watch the movie.

Make your own Thor trick or treat bag, patterns for Captain America and Black widow too

Earlier this week I shared a tutorial for some Halloween trick or treat bags that were just Halloween themed but sometimes it is fun to have a bag that matches your costume so I decided that I would make some Avengers themed bags as well. I made a Thor themed bag for Lucy to use with her costume, I also made a Captain America and a Black Widow themed bag. In the instructions there is a link to print the patterns that I made for these three characters but you could use the same idea for the other Avengers as well. For Thor I made a red bag with a hammer, for Cap a blue bag with his shield, Black Widow's is a black bag with a red hourglass. If you wanted to make a bag for Iron Man you could make it dark red with an ARC Reactor in gold or light blue, Hulk's bag could have a nuclear symbol and be made in green and purple, a bow and arrow could be used for Haweye.

The bags are really simple to make, they are just two rectangles sewn together, one with the symbols ironed on the front, handles are added and that is it. Here is how you can make your own Avengers Trick or Treat Bags to complete your little Avenger's costume:

Avengers: Age of Ultron Trick or Treat Bags

Finished Size: 10" x 12" (not including handles)

You will need:

  • Fabric
      • Captain America:
        • 1/2 yard of blue
        • small amount or red
        • small amount of white
      • Thor
        • 1/2 yard red
        • scrap of brown
        • scrap of gray
        • scrap of light gray
      • Black Widow:
        • 1/2 yard of black
        • scrap of red
    • paper backed, double sided fusible web
    • coordinating thread
    • scissors, rotary cutter, mat, and ruler
    • sewing machine
    • iron
    • pattern (click her for pattern PDF)

    Instructions:

Print the pattern and cut the following pieces-

Main Bag- (blue for Captain America, red for Thor, black for Black Widow)
    • 2- 11" x 14 1/2"
Handles- (same colors as main bag)
    • 2- 18"x 3"

For the shapes that will be ironed on it is easiest if you first trace your shapes on the fusible web, cut out the section around the shapes, not the individual shapes, iron that onto your fabric and then cut the shapes out, cutting the fabric and fusible web at the same time.
    • For Captain America-
      • from red cut the largest circle and the third circle
      • from white cut the second circle and the star
      • from blue cut the smallest circle
    • For Thor-
      • from brown cut the handle
      • from the gray cut the larger piece of the hammer
      • from the light gray cut the front of the hammer
    • For Black Widow-
      • from red cut the hourglass symbol
The next step is to assemble the fronts of your bags by ironing on the pieces to one of the main bag pieces. It is important to note that the top 2" of your bag will be folded down and there is a 1/2" seam allowance around the other 3 sides, so you will want to center your symbol in that area.

Peel off the paper backing from the symbol pieces and assemble your bag fronts as follows:

    Captain America-

Layer the circles so that the biggest red circle is is on the bottom, then the the white circle, the smaller red circle and then the blue circle. On top of that place the white star. Place on the bag front and iron on.

    Thor-

Place the pieces on the bag front so that the light gray piece is on top of the darker gray piece (see pictures for placement) and the handle is centered along the bottom of the hammer, I overlapped the hammer just slightly over the top of the handle. I tilted the hammer just a little and ironed it on.

    Black Widow-

Place the red hourglass in the center of the bag and iron on.

Sew the bag together as follows:

Prepare your handles by folding the straps in half and sewing a 1/2" seam down the side to create a tube. Turn inside out, to do this I attached a safety pin along one edge and tucked it inside and pulled it through the tube and out the other side, you can also sew a small seam along one short edge and use a pencil to turn the tube. Press and topstitch about 1/8" from the edge along each long side. Set the handles aside.

Place your 2 main sections (front and back) right sides together and sew along the 2 sides and bottom with a 1/2" seam allowance. Before turning right side out stitch around outside edge with a zigzag or overcast stitch to finish the raw edge. Turn right side out.

Fold the top edge down 1 inch, pin handles about 1 1/2" in from each edge, lining up raw edges. Fold top down again enclosing the raw edge of both the bag and the handles. Pin all the way around, be sure that your handles are pulled up so that they are coming out the top of the bag. Stitch around the inside edge of the fold, close to the edge. Then stitch around again close to the top edge of the bag.

These bags are really quick and easy to make, and a fun way to have a trick or treating bag that matches your costume. And, I don't know about your kids but I know that mine will find ways to use them all year round. They will be great for carrying toys around, or even library books.
