5 Little Monsters: Valentine Candy Bags

Valentine Candy Bags

Today I am participating in a series called "Craft Lightning" with a Valentine's theme. We were challenged to come up with Valentine projects that you can make in 15 minutes or less. When I am trying to think of a quick projects I usually don't immediately think of a crochet project since those usually take me more than 15 minutes (although the little crocheted hearts I made at Christmas time only take a few minutes to make and they would be perfect for Valentine's Day). Instead I decided I would make a super simple sewing project, little muslin treat bags with iron on hearts perfect for filling up with treats for Valentine's Day.

All I did was cut out some rectangles out of muslin, sew them together, and add a heart to the front. I was playing around with some different ideas for hearts to put on the front and couldn't quite decided which one I wanted to use to I made a few different ones. I did just a plain heart, two hearts, and a couple that were meant to look like conversation hearts. I just used scraps of vinyl I had left over from other projects so it was really inexpensive in addition to being easy.

How to Make Valentine Candy Bags

You will need:

  • muslin (1/4 yard or scraps at least big enough to cut two 6" x 8 1/2" rectangles)
  • coordinating thread
  • rotary cutter, ruler, mat, and scissors
  • sewing machine
  • scraps of iron on vinyl
  • Cricut Design Space file or make your own
  • iron
  • pressing cloth
  • ribbon, thin rickrack, or twine

Instructions:

Cut 2 rectangles 6" x 8 1/2" for each bag you want to make.

Place two together and sew around three sides, then turn right side out. You can hem the top or zigzag stitch around the top like I did on the Be Mine bag, or you can just leave it unfinished.

Cut out the iron on hearts. You can use the hearts that I made in Design Space if you have a Cricut, make your own design and cut them out on a cutting machine, or even just cut out some hearts by hand.

Iron the bag flat, place the heart towards the bottom of the bag, like on the bottom half, you want to leave plenty of room for tying closed. Cover with pressing cloth and press in place. Peel off the plastic covering.

Fill your bag with candy and tie closed with ribbon or something similar.

These little bags would be a fun way to give treats for Valentine's Day. Be sure to check out all of the other quick, 15 minute or less, Valentine's Crafts on the Valentine round of Craft Lightning.
