5 Little Monsters: Top Knot Crocheted Baby Hat

Top Knot Crocheted Baby Hat

I have been in sort of a crochet funk lately. I have just been having such a hard time wanting to work on things and getting projects done, especially bigger projects. I think when I get to that point one of the best things is to make something small. Something that I can finish quick and feel that satisfaction and accomplishment that comes with finishing a new design.

I have had a shawl/wrap that I have been working on for months and was just struggling to get the pattern just right. I wasn't loving the way it was turning out and ripped it out and started over so many times. I just really wasn't feeling it. I had been sent some beautiful fingering weight yarn and I was trying to figure out the perfect way to use it.

To be honest I don't do a lot with fingering weight yarns, my go to yarns would be more in the worsted weight category. But, that being said, I do occasionally enjoy working with thinner or thicker yarns just to kind of switch it up. My favorite thing to make with fingering weight yarns is probably scarves. I love the light weight and detail you get with the thin yarn.

I was so excited when this I received this yarn from A Good Yarn. It is their Boca Chica yarn, which is a hand-dyed 100% superwash merino wool yarn. I love the colors in hand dyed yarn, and there are lots of beautiful colors available in the Boca Chica line. A Good Yarn is located in Sarasota, Florida and all of the colors in this line are named after things in the Florida Keys. I chose Rainbow Reef (the pink and gray) and Dolphin (the gray).

The yarn is soft and so nice to work with. When my wrap wasn't working out as well as I would like (no fault of the yarn, just my design), I decided I wanted to use the leftover yarn to make a small project and I thought it would be perfect for a baby project. I thought the lightweight yarn would make a nice light hat for babies born in warmer months and I knew exactly what hat style I wanted to try.

I wanted to try a top knot style hat and thought it would work best with a thinner yarn like this. It is made similar to any other top down crocheted hat, except that you start with a skinny tube at the top that is tied into a knot. I think they turned out really cute, and totally gender neutral. Sometimes it can be hard to find interesting patterns that are more boyish, not lacy or frilly but also not just a plain basic hat, but I think this one works great for both boys and girls.

Hopefully soon I will finish my original design and share it, but until then here is a cute little baby hat.
