Today I am excited to be joining the the Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along. This is, I think, my 3rd year participating in this particular crochet along. Each Monday and Thursday from October 3- December 15 there will be a new crochet pattern shared as part of the crochet along, for a total of 22 patterns. Each pattern will be a one-skein or scrappy stash buster project, something that can be used as a holiday gift, decor, or wrap. In addition to all of the new holiday patterns, you can also win some really awesome prizes. Click on the link above or the picture below for all of the details on how you can participate, to find links to all of the patterns, and enter to win prizes.

Hats are one of my favorite winter projects to make, especially when I am wanting something that works up pretty quick and doesn't use a lot of yarn. They are great for everyone, I mean who can't use a nice warm hat in the winter. You can make them to give as gifts to everyone on your list, all ages (this pattern comes in 5 sizes from baby - adult) and genders.

For this pattern I made a top down hat with a post stitch ribbing, using a simple textured stitch for the main portion of the hat, the trinity stitch. I have used the trinity stitch in the past for a dishcloth pattern, but this was the first time I have ever used this stitch in the round. It has a very different look when worked in the round vs. when it is worked flat. When worked flat in back and forth rows it has more of a star stitch type design. When worked in the round, not turning at the end of each, it creates tiny little clusters. When I first thought of trying the stitch I wasn't really sure exactly what it would look like, but I love the texture created by the little trinity stitch clusters stacked on top of each other.

The trinity stitch is named that because it is worked across 3 stitches, it is basically a "single crochet 3 together" similar to the way a single crochet increase is worked, but worked across 3 stitches instead of 2. As a result each of the little clusters has 3 legs, one in each of the 3 stitches it is worked in.

I used Red Heart Super Saver Ombre for the hats that I made, but they could be made in any similar medium weight yarn. I used two colors alternating the sizes, but have enough left that I think I could have gotten one of each size hat out of each 10 oz. skein. It was kind of fun to watch the way the colors faded or darken as I made each hat, each one turning out a little different even though they were all made from the same skein of yarn.

The hat pattern is available in 5 sizes: 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler, Child, and Adult.

How to Crochet the Trinity Hat

You will need:

Instructions:

The Trinity Hat is worked from the top down, starting with a magic ring

Each hat has a middle section of trinity stitch, each stitch starts in the same stitch the last stitch ended.

The ribbing is a post stitch ribbing, made with alternating front and back post stitches.

An optional faux fur pom pom can be added at the end. My favorite way to add a faux fur pom pom is to use an elastic loop pom pom, I sew a button to the inside of the hat, then pull the loop through to the inside of the hat and loop around the button. Check out this video for how to attach a faux fur pom pom.
