We are on Day 5 of the Spring 2025 Little Safari Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along. So far we have a Lion, an Elephant, a Crocodile, and a Cheetah, and today we are adding a Little Hippopotamus to the group.
When I was deciding which animals to include in this set and narrowing it down to only 12 it was kind of hard to choose which animals to include and which to leave off, but a hippo was one that was always going to be on the list. Although I guess that has been the case with all of the animals that I have included so far.
The hippo is made very similar to the elephant, the body and legs are the same. Instead of a trunk the hippo has a big muzzle and instead of big ears it has tiny ones. I added the same little toes to the feet that I did on the elephant, but instead of making them in white I used a lighter gray so that they are a little more subtle. I also stitched a couple of nostrils to the muzzle.
The other difference with the hippo vs. the elephant is that I decided to add a pink belly patch. Hippos have a pinkish color to them, especially in areas under their mouth and belly and I wanted to find a way to show that. Since they are mostly gray I wanted the hippo to be gray, but somehow include the pink as well and a pink belly seemed to be the best way to do that.
Like with all of the others I used Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn for the hippo. I used the same color for the hippo as I used for the Elephant, True Grey, but I also used a very small amount of a slightly lighter gray for the toes and nostrils, Pale Gray, and a little bit of pink for the belly patch, Soft Rose.
Check back tomorrow to see what Little Safari Animal Day 5 will bring!
