I recently shared a pattern for some crocheted ornaments that fit over a Christmas ball ornament. I had gotten a big box of the ornaments and after I made the last ones, using the trinity stitch, I had several ideas for other ornaments that I could make using different stitches. I decided to make a second set with a different stitch. Since Christmas is coming up fast I probably won't make anymore for this year, but there are more stitch designs I want to try so there will likely be more next year.  For this particular ornament I decided to used crossed double crochet stitches. Rather than doing a full middle section of the stitch I had chosen like I did with the trinity stitch ornaments, instead I did a couple of rounds separated by a round of single crochet. So it is almost like stripes of the crossed double crochet stitches around the ornament.

Just like the trinity stitch ornament I used single crochet rounds to make the base of the ornament, increasing to make a circle the diameter of my ornament. I then did the patterned section with the crossed double crochet stitches, and finished off with a couple single crochet rounds around the top. The little "pouch" that this creates slips right over the ornament ball and all you need to do to finish it up is cinch the top close.

These ornaments are super quick and easy to make. They work up in no time so even though Christmas is just around the corner there is still plenty of time to make some for Christmas.

How to Crochet a Crossed Doubles Christmas Ornament

The sizing is important on the ornaments so that the crocheted piece fits over the ornament without being too tight or too loose. My ornaments measured about 3" in diameter, or just a little less, so when I finished my increase rounds I wanted my circle to be 3" in diameter. I achieved this with 5 rounds/30 single crochet using an I hook. If you are not ending up with a 3" diameter circle after round 5 you may need to adjust your hook size to get the right gauge.

Finish off and cut yarn, weave the tail through the chain spaces, place the ornament in the crocheted piece, pull the tail to cinch the top closed around the top of the ornament, weave in end.
