Last year I bought a big box of clear ball Christmas ornaments with a few different projects in mind, and I made a few of them, but I had every intention of using some of them to make some crochet covered ornaments but with other projects I was working on it didn't happen last year. So this year I pulled out my box of ornaments and made some quick crocheted ornaments.

I originally envisioned making the ribbed kind that I have seen where you make a ribbed rectangle and sew it into a tube, and cinch up the top and bottom around the ornament. Basically the same idea as my ribbed pumpkin pattern, just as an ornament instead. But then when I sat down to actually make them I ended up going a completely different direction.

One of my favorite things to play around with when crocheting is the different textures you get from different stitches. That is why I have a ton of different crocheted pumpkins, because with the same basic pattern style but switching up the stitches you use you can create pumpkins with so many different textures. I figured the same could apply to ornaments. So I instead chose a stitch, in this case the trinity stitch which I have used in several patterns and is a favorite of mine, and used it to create this little crocheted ornament.

I used single crochet rounds to make the base of the ornament, increasing to make a circle the diameter of my ornament, then did a section of the stitch pattern for the main part of the ornament and finished off with a couple single crochet rounds around the top before cinching it up to close.

The trinity stitch, when worked in the round, creates little stacked clusters made by working a single crochet over 3 stitches (single crochet 3 together or sc3tog). I think it gives kind of a cozy Christmas sweater kind of vibe.

This was a super quick and easy to make project, they work up fast enough you could easily make several of them. Now I am thinking of all of the different stitches I can try to make ornaments so don't be surprised to see more crocheted ornaments over the next few weeks.

How to Crochet a Trinity Stitch Christmas Ornament

You will need:

Instructions:

The sizing is important on the ornaments so that the crocheted piece fits over the ornament without being too tight or too loose. My ornaments measured about 3" in diameter, or just a little less, so when I finished my increase rounds I wanted my circle to be 3" in diameter. I achieved this with 5 rounds/30 single crochet using an I hook. If you are not ending up with a 3" diameter circle after round 5 you may need to adjust your hook size to get the right gauge.

The Trinity Stitch is made by working a single crochet stitch across three stitches- single crochet 3 together or sc3tog. You will begin each new sc3tog in the same stitch you ended the previous sc3tog.

sc3tog: insert hook in first st, pull up a loop, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook

Ornament

Begin with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around, sl st to the first sc to join (30 sc)
Round 6: ch 1, sc3tog, [ch 1, sc3tog starting in the same stitch as the last leg of the previous sc3tog was worked in] repeat around until one stitch remaining, ch 1, sc3tog starting in same stitch as last leg of previous stitch working middle leg in last unworked stitch then working the last leg in the same stitch as the first stitch at the beginning of the round, ch 1, sl st to first sc3tog to join (15 sc3tog, 15 ch)
Round 7-10: repeat round 6 (15 sc3tog, 15 ch)
Round 11: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Round 12: [1 sc in first st, ch 1, sk next st] repeat around, sl st to first sc to join (15 sc, 15 ch sp)

Finish off and cut yarn, weave the tail through the chain spaces, place the ornament in the crocheted piece, pull the tail to cinch the top closed around the top of the ornament, weave in end.
