5 Little Monsters: Crocheted Snowman Plush

Crocheted Snowman Plush

I can't believe it is already December, but a new month means a new Team Creative Crafts collaboration and this month the theme is Snowman Crafts. Ever since I saw the theme for this month I have known exactly what I wanted to make.

When my oldest son was just a couple of years old he had a stuffed snowman. It was kind of like a teddy bear in its style, but a snowman instead of a bear. Instead of stick arms and no legs it had snow arms and legs. I thought it would be fun to crochet something similar. I wanted it to be big, like a cuddly teddy bear size, and super soft and snuggly, so I wanted to use a soft super bulky yarn to make it.

It was a big change to crochet something this big, with thick yarn, after my last crochet project being 24 tiny amigurumi projects in my Mini Amigurumi Advent. Kind of a nice change.

As soon as I finished making my snowman my three youngest all asked if they could have it. They all loved how big and cuddly it is. I may end up needing to make 2 more with different colors of hats and scarves so that they can each have their own snowman.

How to Crochet a Snowman Plush

You will need:

  •  Super Bulky Chenille yarn in White (2 skeins, approx 300 yards total), orange, blue, and green, or desired colors for hat and scarf (Sample made with Sweet Snuggles Lite in White, Peach Pink, Blue Bird, and Ice Green)
  • J crochet hook (6 mm)
  • 2- 20 mm safety eyes
  • yarn needle
  • fiberfill

Instructions:

Head and body are crocheted in one piece from the bottom up. The arms, legs, hat, Pom Pom, scarf, and nose are made separately and sewn on.

All pieces except the scarf begin with a magic ring. Making a magic ring with chenille yarn is a little tricky. To make it easier I recommend starting with a long tail (a short tail will kind of shred when you pull on it), and keep the ring as small as possible so you don't have to tighten a lot. I have also seen recommendations to pull it closed a little more with each stitch so that you don't have to pull a lot right at the end.
