It is the second week of my 12 Weeks of Handmade Holidays series, where I am sharing 2 projects a week that are gift ideas you can make for the holidays, or anytime you need a gift. The first one is always a crochet project and that was yesterday's project, a hat pattern. And the second gift idea is some other kind of craft project, both last week and this week that happened to be a sewing pattern. Honestly, most of the other craft projects in the series will end up being sewing projects, but not all of them. Today's gift idea is a Fabric Lanyard.

I thought this would be a fun and simple idea to make for anyone who uses a lanyard for work. You could make it for teacher gifts, or anyone else who uses lanyards.
It is a really quick and easy to make project. It doesn't take much fabric and it works up in no time at all. The great thing about that is that you can make several, so if you have lots of teachers to make gifts for, for example, this is an easy project to make multiples of.
All you need for this project is some fabric, only about an eighth of a yard (you can even use a fat quarter, it just requires an extra seam), and a lobster clasp with a d-ring. You can also add a strip of thin batting if you would like. An iron is also an important part of making this project successful, I love to use my Cricut EasyPress Mini for stuff like this, but any iron will work. The mini size of that one is just super convenient for little sewing projects. Throw in a sewing machine and some coordinating thread and you are good to go.
I hope this project inspires you to have some handmade gift ideas. Be sure to check out the other projects shared so far in this series- the Solitude Scarf, Easy Fabric Corner Bookmarks, and the Merry Hat, with several more projects to come.
How to Make Fabric Lanyards
Finished size: 3.5" square, 3" square, and 2.5" square
You will need:
- 1/8 of a yard of fabric, or a fat quarter
- lanyard clasp- lobster clasp with 3/4" D-ring
- rotary, cutter, mat, ruler
- sewing machine
- iron
- optional: thin batting
Instructions:
Start by cutting your lanyard pieces. You will need to cut the following pieces:
If using yardage
1 strip- 3" x width of fabric
optional: 3/4" wide strip of batting the same length
If using fat quarter
2 strips- 3"x 22"
optional: 3/4" wide strip of batting (about 43" long)
If you are using fat quarters start by sewing the two strips together, right sides together, on one short end to make a long strip, press the seam open
Press the strip in half to make a strip about 1.5" wide
Open the pressed strip and press each side in to the center, then press in half again so the raw edges are in the center (the same way you would make bias tape or binding), your strip should be 3/4" wide
If you are using batting add your strip inside of the strip under one of the sides that is folded into the center, if you are not using batting skip this step and move on to the next one (in the samples the flower print does not have batting, the scissor print does have batting)
Slide the d-ring onto the strip
Open the short edges and place right sides together and sew to make a big loop, making sure not to twist the strip
Topstitch close to the edge of the strip, then repeat along the other side
Slide the clasp to the place that you want it, I put one of the seams at the bottom where the clasp is and one at the back of the neck, then sew across the end as close as you can to the edge of the d-ring
