In case you missed it, over the next 12 weeks leading up to Christmas I am going to do a series- 12 Weeks of Handmade Holidays. Each weekend I will share 2 different projects that can made as gifts to give this holiday season. One project will be a crochet project, the other will be a different kind of craft project, it may be a sewing project, a Cricut craft, or some other kind of craft. Yesterday I shared the first crochet project in the series, and today is the other craft- this time a sewing project gift idea.

Today's project is a super simple one. It is quick and easy to make, and great for using up fabric scraps. The project is little fabric corner bookmarks. All you need is a few little scraps of fabric, some fusible interfacing, and a sewing machine.

I made some felt corner bookmarks a few years ago, and added some little embroidered flowers to them. They turned out super cute and are fun to make, but the embroidery part made them take a little bit more time. They were still pretty quick but I feel like this fabric version is quicker and easier. It uses 3 squares of fabric cut the same size and some fusible interfacing cut slightly smaller. Press on the interfacing, fold one into a triangle, sew them together and you have a little bookmark.

I made 3 different sizes, just to see how the different sizes looked and which size works best. I think all 3 worked great. The largest size started with 4" squares, which seems to be the most common size I see this kind of bookmarks made. It made a 3.5" square finished size. Honestly it was fine but I feel like it was probably my least favorite size just because it was on the bigger size. The medium size started with a 3.5" square and ended up 3" square finished. This was probably my favorite size and the one I would be most likely to use again. It was large enough without being too big, but not so small that turning it was hard. The smallest size I made started with a 3" square, finished size 2.5". This one also worked great, but I don't think I would go any smaller. My biggest complaint with this one is that turning it right side out was a little more difficult than the bigger sizes. I have seen some tutorials that go even smaller, but I think this is the smallest I would go. One of the reasons I wanted to show the different sizes is because this is a great scrap project and you can change up the size as needed based on the fabrics you are working with and still end up with a cute little bookmark.

One of my favorite ways to give a handmade gift is to pair a small gift that I bought with something handmade for a personalized touch, and I think this is a gift idea that works well for that kind of idea. You could pair a book with a handmade bookmark. It would also work well paired with a few book themed handmade gifts if you wanted a little bit larger of a gift. It would also be great as a small gift for a stocking stuffer for the readers on your list. You could easily make a whole bunch of them in no time.

How to Make Fabric Corner Bookmarks

Finished size: 3.5" square, 3" square, and 2.5" square

You will need:

  • scraps of fabric, 3 per bookmark at least 3" square (charm squares work great for this project)
  • fusible interfacing (I used medium weight, you need about a 4"x8" piece for the largest size)
  • rotary, cutter, mat, ruler
  • sewing machine
  • iron

Instructions:

Start by cutting your squares. You need 3 squares of fabric cut to the same size and 2 squares of interfacing cut 1/2" smaller. I cut the following sizes:

Finished size 3.5" square
3- 4" squares of fabric
2- 3.5" squares of fusible interfacing

Finished size 3" square
3- 3.5" squares of fabric
2- 3" squares of fusible interfacing

Finished size 2.5" square
3- 3" squares of fabric
2- 2.5" squares of fusible interfacing

Cut one square of interfacing in half on the diagonal so you end up with 2 triangles, you will only use one

2 of your squares will make the front and back of the square back of your bookmark, one square will be folded to make the triangle front. One the wrong side of one of the back pieces press the square of interfacing, leaving a 1/4" border around it for the seam allowance.

On the triangle piece- fold it in half diagonally wrong sides together and press to create a center crease. Open up and place the triangle interfacing on the wrong side so the long edge is along the fold line and the outside edges have a seam allowance similar to the square above. Press the interfacing in place.

Layer the 3 pieces- 1 square right side up, triangle piece with the corner lined up with the square, the other square right side down

Sew around the outside of the square with a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving an opening about 1"-1.5" long along one of the edges for turning, leave the opening along one of the edges that is only the 2 squares, not the triangle.

Clip the corners  and turn right side out.

Make sure that your triangle pocket is on the side that you want the finished bookmark to be. Give it a quick press to make it nice and flat.

Topstitch around the outside of the bookmark very close to the edge, closing up the opening you left for turning as you sew.
