Serenity Hat

I am excited to be participating in the Christmas in July Make Along with Underground Crafter. I have participated in this make along for a few years now and it is a fun way to get a head start on Christmas crafting. I know I always wait too long to get started and never finish half of the projects I have planned.

The Christmas in July Make Along is a month full of free patterns for Christmas crochet, knitting, and sewing projects. A new project every day from 27 different bloggers. Each week has a theme and this weeks theme is Gifts for Anyone. Other weeks include Babies, Kids, and Teens (week 1), Women (week 2), Home (week 4), and Pets (week 5).

You can find out more information including links to the projects, sponsors, and how you can join and win prizes on Underground Crafter. Enter to win prizes by August 4, 2023.

One of my favorite Christmas gifts to make ahead of time, that you can make for anyone, any age, size, or gender, is hats. Anyone can use a nice warm hat in the winter, plus they are pretty quick to make so you can make a bunch up ahead of time. Also, no one wants to spend the summer working on a big crocheted blanket when it is hot outside. Hats are great make ahead crafts in the summer because they are small enough that you aren't draped in warm yarn as you work.

I wanted to choose a really simple hat that would work for men and women, children, and even babies. I also wanted to make a hat with bulky yarn so that they would work up fast. As I started thinking up designs I remembered an old pattern that I made several years ago for a company I was working with at the time. That company went out of business, deleted their website, and my pattern on their website was lost.

It was a hat that used half double crochet stitches in the 3rd loop to make a knit look hat. It was made with bulky yarn. That pattern was only in adult size, but I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to recreate that pattern and make it in multiple sizes. The top is worked in double crochet, but the body of the hat is made in hdc in the 3rd loop or camel stitch.

And that is how the Serenity Hat was born. The name comes from the yarn I used, Premier Serenity Chunky for the gray version, and Premier Bloom Chunky for the cream colored version. The chunky yarn paired with a large hook make these hats work up fast. Plus the pattern is very simple and repetitive so it is a great take along project, or something to work on while you watch a show.

The Serenity Hat pattern includes 5 sizes- Adult, Child, Toddler, 6-12 Month Baby, and 3-6 Month Baby.
