Today is a day I have been looking forward to for quite a while, it is the first day of the first Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along of 2024! In case you missed it, the theme for this crochet along is Pond Pals. There will be a variety of little creatures, mostly bugs, birds, and a few other small animals, that you might find around a pond in the spring.
When I was first thinking of theme options for this crochet along I started with bugs, but then I thought it would be fun to add in some birds too, then that evolved into including a couple other animals that didn't fit in either of those categories. But since the whole theme originally started with bugs I decided it was only fitting to start with a bug for day one, and since I decided to call this theme pond pals I thought I would start with one of the bugs that I feel like is one of the most common to see around water, a Dragonfly.
One thing I have kind of had a hard time with with this crochet along is naming the patterns. I usually like to use some kind of adjective in front of the name, typically something that means small since it is a "mini" amigurumi crochet along. The problem is a lot of these animals are so small in reality that their amigurumi counterparts, even in mini form, are way bigger than the animals themselves. So just know when they are called "little" or "mini" or in this case "dainty" it is because they are small compared to most amigurumi projects, even if they are many times the actual size of the real thing.
The little Dragonfly is made in a few pieces, the head and body in one, with 2 tiny antennae and 4 little wings made separately and sewn on. Just like with almost all of my mini amigurumi it has 6mm safety eyes and a tiny embroidered smile. If you don't want to use safety eyes you can always just embroider the eyes on as well.
The finished dragonfly is about 4 inches tall to the top of its head (plus a little for the antennae). I used a teal/turquoise color for the body. I always think of dragonflies being that sort of shimmery purple/blue/green color depending on the light so I think anything in that color family would work well, but they come in other colors too so you could use any color you want. Then for the wings I used white.

How to Crochet a Dainty Dragonfly
Finished Size about 4" tall
You will need:
- Worsted weight yarn in teal (or desired body color) and white (Sample made with Loops & Threads Impeccable in Aqua, and Red Heart Super Saver in White)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6mm safety eyes
- black embroidery floss and needle
- stuffing
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
Instructions:
The body/head is made starting with a magic ring. The antennae and wings are made starting with a chain and working back down the chain, in the case of the wings you will work down the chain, then turn and work back up the other side of the chain.
*Note: the body is stuffed but it is very skinny and may be difficult to stuff, to make it easier use small bits of stuffing, stuffing as you go, and it may be easiest if you kind of roll the stuffing into skinny logs and use something to poke it in (like the back of your crochet hook, a pencil, or a dowel). You don't need a lot of stuffing but enough to help it hold its shape and not be floppy.
Body/Head
Make 1 in body color, beginning with magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Rounds 4-6: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Add safety eyes between rounds 4 and 5 with a few stitches in between
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 7: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 8: sc2tog around (6 sc)
Rounds 9-18: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
Finish off, weave in ends
Stitch a small smile below the eyes
Antennae
make 2 with body color, starting with chain
ch 5
sk ch closest to hook, sc in next, sl st in last 3 ch (1 sc, 3 sl st)
sew antennae to the top of the head
Wings
make 4 with white, starting with chain
ch 6
sl st in ch closest to hook, sl st in next ch, sc in each of next 3 ch, (sc, hdc, hdc, sc) in last ch turning as you go so you can start working down the other side of the ch in the unworked loops, sc in each of next 3 ch (same 3 that had sc on the other side), sl st in last 2 ch (4 sl st, 8 sc, 2 hdc)
sew 2 wings to each side of the body, just below the head
