Today is Day 3 of the Pond Pals Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along. That means we are already a quarter of the way through, and today is not a bug! The first bird in the series is a little Happy Hummingbird.

There will be a few birds included in this series but I was probably most excited about the hummingbird, in fact that is probably why it is this early in the set. It was one of the first designs that I made. I was excited to make this one because it is the most different than other birds that I have made in the past. It is still made in the same way as others but simple changes, like the long pointy beak, turned it into a hummingbird.

If you are familiar with my other crochet alongs then you probably know that for a lot of animals I have kind of a standard body/head that I use for most of them, and that includes most birds. That is one thing that has made this theme an interesting challenge, because most of the animals in this set don't work with my standard body. But since I have used it for birds in the past I used it for this one too.

The head and body are made in one piece from the bottom up. The long beak, wings, tail, and feet are made separately and sewn on after. I also added a color change from the green color of the body to a coral color for the bottom of the head. Technically the red color is just supposed to be on the front, like the chin area, but I just made the whole bottom part of the head that color to make the color change easier. I used a small unlabeled ball of yarn from my stash for the coral color so I don't know exactly what yarn/color it is, but anything in the red/pink/coral family would work. I thought a pinky orange would work better with my green than a bright red so that is what I went with. Another change that I made for the hummingbird is that instead of a yellow or orange beak and feet, I made them out of a dark gray. The white belly patch is not shown in the pictures but it is just a white circle sewn onto the front of the body.

The finished hummingbird is about 4 inches tall, similar in size to the other 2 animals in the set so far. One quarter of the way done and so far we have a Dragonfly, an Ant, and a Hummingbird. What do you think tomorrow will be?
