We are to Day 4 of the Pond Pals Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along, more than halfway through the first week. So far we have 2 bugs and 1 bird, and today we add a Wiggly Worm.
I honestly don't know what category worms fall in, I always put them in the same category as bugs, kind of those creepy crawly things, even though I know that they are not really bugs since they don't have legs and an exoskeleton, and stuff like that. Also, when I made this worm I was specifically thinking of an earthworm type of worm, which again, for me I think of things you will see crawling around outside and earthworms, slug, and snails all kind of fall in that same category for me along with bugs.
Since earthworms have segmented bodies with a little smooth section I wanted to try to recreate that with this worm. It is a little harder to see than I hoped but most of the body of the worm is made working into the back loop in order to give that bumpy texture of the segmented part, but a couple of rounds are worked normal to give the appearance of that smooth section.
I also added a chenille stem into the body of the worm so that I could bend it to give it the wiggly part of the wiggly worm. I only had a pack of black chenille stems and I wish I had had some white or a color closer to the yarn color because I feel like you can kind of see the the black through the stitches.
The finished worm is about 5 inches long when stretched out, a little shorter if you bend it. I used a peachy-pink color for my worm since I was going for an earthworm type look. Just like the other animals the worm has a little face made of safety eyes and an embroidered smile. 4 down, a dragonfly, an ant, a hummingbird, and a worm, 8 more to go!

How to Crochet a Wiggly Worm
Finished Size about 5" long
You will need:
- Worsted weight yarn in peach/pink color (Sample made with Loops & Threads Impeccable in Peach Pink)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6mm safety eyes
- black embroidery floss and needle
- 2 chenille stems
- stuffing
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
Instructions:
The worm is made in one piece starting with a magic ring.
*Note: the body is narrow and you will want to add a little stuffing as you go, but don't stuff it tightly, you want to be able to add the chenille stem and also be able to bend it so you don't want it really stiff.
Body/Head
Make 1 in body color, beginning with magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Rounds 3-4: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
Add safety eyes between rounds 2 and 3 with a few stitches in between (I put them almost to the side of the head, maybe 4 stitches in between)
Round 5: [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (9 sc)
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work, stuff the head firmer and the body very lightly
Round 6: 1 sc in each st (9 sc)
Rounds 7-10: 1 sc in blo of each st (9 sc)
Rounds 11-12: 1 sc in each st (9 sc)
Round 13-18: 1 sc in blo of each st (9 sc)
Twist 2 chenille stems together and bend the ends to the center (so there are no pointy ends) so that the chenille stem is the length of the worm
Insert the twisted chenille stem into the body of the worm
Round 19: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off, weave in ends
Stitch a small smile below the eyes
Bend the middle of the worm up into the desired wiggly shape
