It is Day 9 of the Woodland Christmas Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along, three-quarters of the way through. Today's little woodland creature is a tiny Radiant Raccoon shining bright with a little string of Christmas lights.

This little guy made me think of my parents as I made him. They recently moved to a tiny town and kind of live on the outskirts of town surrounded by cornfields. They have had a major raccoon issue since they moved in. They have had caught several and they keep coming back. I am pretty sure they are my mom's least favorite animal at this point. And to be fair I think they are pretty nasty animals, and not one I would ever want to run into in real life, I don't think the trash panda name is without merit. But I'm pretty sure I would freak out to find a mouse in my stocking too, so I don't know that there are any of the animals I have made, or will be sharing in the next few days, that I would actually want to run into.

This little raccoon turned out pretty cute though, it would surely never terrorize anyone. Although he is holding a string of lights, is he getting ready to decorate, or being destructive and pulling them off of something? Who knows, you can decide.

I made my raccoon with little eye patches to make the mask on its face, a big striped tail, and little pointy ears. A tiny scarf is tied around its neck and a string of lights in its hands. For the string of lights I used a variegated yarn with short color changes, if you don't have any yarn like that, or want to buy any, you could just do a solid color.

How to Crochet a Radiant Raccoon

Finished Size about 4" tall sitting

You will need:

Instructions:

All of the pieces, except the ears, the scarf and the Christmas lights, are made in the round beginning with a magic ring, the head and body made in one piece, although unlike the other animals the eyes are not actually attached to the body, they will be attached with the eye patches. The eye patches, nose, arms, legs, tail, and ears are made separately and sewn on. Safety eyes and nose attached to the eye patches and nose where directed, if you choose two embroider the eyes and nose (better for small children) just embroider in the same spot. The scarf and lights are made separately and sew on at the end. The string of lights is made by first crocheting a chain with little bumps out of the "lights" color, then crocheting over that with green yarn to make the cord.

Turn the eye patches so that the white is sticking out toward the outside on both (one of them you will have to flip upside down so be sure to pull your ends to the front on that one), you want them to mirror each other.

Add a safety eye to each patch

Sew eye patches to the face, close together with the white wing part sticking out (it may be easier to wait until you have the nose done so you can be sure that the placement works, but you will sew the eye patches on first and the nose will overlap the eye patches)
