Now that it is November I feel like the temperatures are finally starting to cool down enough that it is almost time to pull out the winter hats, and coats, and scarves. The last couple of weeks we have had days where it feels like you need to bundle up in the morning because it is freezing, but by a few hours later you are ripping off layers because it has warmed up so much, so it has been more sweatshirts and hoodies  rather than full winter get-up, but it will be here we know it.

That means time to make hats and other warm weather accessories. I'm not one that feels like fall and winter are the only seasons for crochet, there are plenty of things you can make year round- amigurumi, dishcloths, decor, bags, just to name a few, but this time of year does mean a wider variety of projects.

Hats are my favorite cold weather accessory to make, probably because it is the one I am most likely to wear personally. I love playing with different textures when I make hats. I love all the different textures you can get with crochet stitches, it is one of my favorite things about crochet. This hat pattern incorporates a little cable twist around the hat.

I used the new (or at least new-ish, I'm not sure when it came out but it was my first time using it) Red Heart Super Saver Brushed. I first saw it a few months ago when I went to JoAnn for something else and I immediately thought it would be perfect for hats, but I didn't get any that time. The next time I went I decided to go ahead and buy some to make hats, and that is how we ended up here.

I like to make my hat patterns in 5 sizes: Adult, Child, Toddler, Baby 6-12 Months, and Baby 3-6 Months, so I chose 5 different colors. I like the kind of muted shades they had available. I don't remember how many colors there were, but they all seemed to be in the same kind of muted tones. You can definitely make more than one hat from each skein, how many depends on the size, but I like to use a different color for each size for my samples just because I like the way it looks in pictures.

I do feel like the brushed texture of the yarn took away a little bit of the definition of the cables. I still liked the way it looked, but I think you would get a little more definition and could see the details of the cables just a little bit better with a regular worsted weight yarn (like normal Red Heart Super Saver, or something similar). I like the softness you get with the brushed yarn, but you do lose a little of that detail and it is something to keep in mind when you decide on what kind of yarn you want to use.

How to Crochet the Mini Twist Hat

You will need:

Instructions:

The Mini Twist Hat is worked from the top down, starting with a magic ring

Each hat has a middle section of mini cable twists made with post stitches, both regular and crossed.

The ribbing is a post stitch ribbing, made with alternating front and back post stitches.

An optional faux fur pom pom can be added at the end. My favorite way to add a faux fur pom pom is to use an elastic loop pom pom, I sew a button to the inside of the hat, then pull the loop through to the inside of the hat and loop around the button. Check out this video for how to attach a faux fur pom pom.

Gauge:

4 rounds of dc (40 dc) = 4.5"
The crown diameter and hat height for each hat size is listed

Special Stitch:

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): work this stitch just like a normal double crochet stitch, but instead of working into the top of the stitch like you normally would insert your hook around the post of the stitch from front to back, around the post, and back out the front pulling the post forward to the front

Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): work this stitch just like a normal double crochet stitch, but instead of working into the top of the stitch like you normally would insert your hook around the post of the stitch from back to front, around the post, and back out the back pulling the post back to the inside
