Day 8 of the Halloween themed Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along, and no Halloween themed set would be complete without including a little witch, so today's pattern is the Wee Witch.

Since I used a very dark gray color in place of the black on my cauldron and bat I already had that yarn in my bag when I was ready to make the witch, so my little witch is wearing a dark gray hat and dress, but you could definitely use a real black, or even a dark purple would work well.

I wanted to use all of the Halloween colors that I could for my witch so I gave her bright green stockings, orange hair, and a purple hat band. I chose to use a tan/skin tone color for her skin, but green skin would be fun too.

Since the witch is wearing a hat I didn't want to make a whole wig cap for the hair, since it would just be one more layer to fit under the hat, and one more piece to make that wouldn't really matter because you wouldn't even see it. So for her hair I made some little bangs that fit under the edge of her hat, and then I made two braids that also were stitched on just under the edge of her hat. So you just get that little bit of hair sticking out from under the hat. Once the hat is sewn in place it looks good, but before you sew on the hat it kind of looks like she may have been hit with a curse of some kind with her bald head and just a couple of braids and some bangs.

The body is made the same way as the bat, and many of my other mini amigurumi, but one of the rounds on the body is worked in the back loop only (blo) leaving the front loops unworked. The skirt will then be crocheted into those unworked front loops after the body is done.

How to Crochet a Wee Witch

Finished Size: about 5" tall sitting (to the top of hat)

You will need:

Instructions:

The witch's body and head are made in one piece, with arms, legs, hat, and hair made separately and sewn on after. Most pieces, with the exception of the hair and hat band, are made beginning with a magic ring.

The skirt is crocheted directly onto the body. One round on the body is worked in the back loop only, leaving the front loops open. The skirt will be worked into those open loops.

The hair does not cover the whole head, it just sticks out from under the edge of the hat and is made in 3 pieces, bangs that stick out under the front edge of the hat, and 2 braids that are sewn to the head just under the sides of the hat.

Skirt

Use black (or color you are using for dress) and attach yarn to the unworked loops of round 6 of the body. I prefer to start in the back so that the joins are less noticeable.

Join yarn to unworked loop
Round 1: ch 2 (does not count as a st), [2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (27 dc)
Round 2: 1 dc in each st, sl st to first dc to join (27 dc)

Finish off and weave in ends

Arms

Make 2 starting with skin color, begin with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)

Switch to black (dress color)

Round 3-5: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Sew the arms to the side of the body

Legs

Make 2 starting with black (or color you are using for shoes), beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)

Rounds 4-6: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Sew the legs to to the bottom of the body

Hair

The hair for the witch is made in two parts, you will make one bangs piece and 2 braids

Bangs

Make 1 with hair color

ch 10
Row 1: sc in second ch from the hook and each ch to the end (9 sc)
Row 2: turn, sl st in first, [sk next st, 4 dc in next, sk 1, sl st in next] repeat (2 shells)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Braids

Make 2 with hair color

Cut 6 strands of yarn, about 8" long

Fold in half, and use another piece of yarn to tie them together in the middle (they will kind of look like the beginning of a tassel at this point, leave the piece you used to tie the bundle together long as you will use this to sew the braid to the head

Divide the strands into thirds (4 strands each) and braid until you reach the desired length, then tie off the end. I did this by simply wrapping a strand around the end of the braid, then using my crochet hook to pull it through the center of the wrapping, then pull tight to secure

Trim the ends of the braids to desired length

Hat

Make 1 with Black yarn (or hat color), begin with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 4 sc (4 sc)
Round 2: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st], repeat around (6 sc)
Round 3:  [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st], repeat around (9 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts], repeat around (12 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts], repeat around (15 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts], repeat around (18 sc)
Round 7: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 5 sts], repeat around (21 sc)
Round 8: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 6 sts], repeat around (24 sc)
Round 9: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 7 sts], repeat around (27 sc)
Round 10: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 8 sts], repeat around (30 sc)
Rounds 11-12: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Round 13: sl st to first st to join previous round, ch 2, 2 dc in each st, sl st to first dc to join (60 dc)

Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing

Hat Band

Make 1 with purple (or desired color)

ch 33
1 sc in second ch from hook and each ch to the end (32 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing

Stitch the bangs into place so they sit with the shells edge just above the eyes

Stitch a braid to each side of the head next to the bangs

Pull the hat on over the head so it covers the top edge of the bangs and braids (you can put the hat on, then tuck the bangs  and braids under to determine placement before stitching everything on if that helps make sure everything is in the right place)

Stitch the hat onto the head

Wrap the hat band around the hat just above the brim and stitch in place.
